UHA Award Submissions 2023

Thank you for your interest in submitting work for this year's UHA awards cycle. We're excited to announce the increase in our prize amounts this year! To submit, please follow the instructions below

   SUBMISSION DEADLINE: APRIL 22, 2023 11:59PM EST.  

Kenneth Jackson Award for Best Book in North American History (excluding Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean)

The UHA will award a prize of $1000 for the best monograph in North American (excluding Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean) urban history with a citation listing 2022 as the year of publication. 

To submit a work for consideration for this award, please follow these steps

    Once you fill out this form, you'll receive an email
    with the information you need to submit the book(s) and other required information to the award committee. 
  2. Mail materials to the addresses shared with you via email after you filled out the form above. Each member of the award committee must receive a copy of the work(s) submitted. 

**Please note: filling out the initial form for an award (step 1, above) does NOT submit materials to the award committee. To submit materials to the award committee, you must follow the steps laid out in the email you receive after submitting the initial form (step 2, above).

Award for Best Book in Non-North American urban History (including Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean)

The UHA will award a prize of $1000 for the best monograph in Non-North American (including Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean) urban history with a citation listing 2022 as the year of publication. 

To submit a work for consideration for this award, please follow these steps

Arnold Hirsch Award for Best Article in Urban History published in a scholarly journal in 2022

(No geographic restriction) 


The UHA will award a prize of $500 for the best article on urban history published in a scholarly journal with a citation listing 2022 as the year of publication.

Michael Katz Award for Best Dissertation in Urban History completed in 2022

(No geographic restriction) 

The UHA will award a prize of $500 for the best dissertation in urban history with a completion date in 2022.  Completion means defended, submitted, and published in your university's library system, with a citation listing 2022 as the year of publication.

To submit a work for consideration for this award, please follow these steps

  1. Fill out the form found here:

  2. Submit materials to the email addresses sent to you via email after you filled out the form above. Each member of the award committee must receive a copy of the dissertation.

FAQs

Why do I have to fill out a form to receive the submissions information?
Award committee members provide email and physical addresses for award submissions. Requiring you to fill out a form to receive the submissions information allows us to keep our committee member information more private than if we listed it on our website. 

When will the winners be announced? 
Award winners will be announced in August 2023.
